Join Worthing Astronomy Society as part of a nationwide extravaganza tied into the BBC Two show, Stargazing LIVE, for two fantastic live astronomy events in Worthing on 27th January and 30th January 2012.
Join us from 6pm, for the opportunity to view the night sky through telescopes, binoculars and with the naked eye. You'll see Venus (early), the moon, Jupiter, the Orion Nebula and many more.
Weather permitting, we'll show members of the public planets, stars and galaxies.
There will be a 5-day old moon, bright enough to be viewed, but not too bright to affect the rest of the sky.
The moons of Jupiter should be seen. Later in the evening Mars will become visible. Telescopes and binoculars will be available for use. This event was run last year with high attendance, it is perfect for enquiring young minds, so bring warmly dressed children along, suitable for ages 5+.
Where
Ferring seafront / Goring Gap, West Sussex. Park in the coast road car park at the bottom of Sea Lane, Ferring, West Sussex. The event will take place on a concrete platform overlooking the sea. It was used during the war as a gun emplacement. It is 50 yards west of the car park at the bottom of Sea Lane, Ferring, Worthing, West Sussex.
Winter Observing
Remember to dress warmly for this event, hats, gloves and scarves are a must! A torch will also be handy. We must insist though, that during the hours of darkness, no white lights are used. These can damage the night vision of others around you, so red lights only (bike lights are ideal!). If you intend to stay for a few hours, bring a folding chair, blankets and a thermos of something delicious too!
| We also have our own Observatory, and hold regular observing evenings and star parties. We would love to see you there, please see the Observatory and Star Parties pages for details, or contact us for more information. To celebrate the International Year of Astronomy 2009, Worthing Astronomical Society, together with Adur Astronomical Society, hosted an exhibition of members' work at Worthing Library. | ![]() |
